Lesson Overview

Students learn how businesses use customer feedback and market research to make decisions about products. Through a class flavor survey, students experience how companies collect information, organize results into a bar graph, and use data to determine customer preferences. Students then make a business decision based on their class data.

Learning Objectives

✔ Participate in a class survey

✔ Collect and organize data into a bar graph

✔ Read and interpret a bar graph

✔ Analyze customer preferences using data

✔ Make a business decision supported by evidence

Activity Overview

1. Introduction- 5 minutes

Teacher Script: “Before businesses create products, they often ask customers what they like. This process is called market research. Businesses use market research to learn what customers want before spending time and money creating a product. Today, we are going to become market researchers and help a candy company decide which flavor to create.”

2. Class Survey – 10 minutes

Display the flavor choices on the slideshow (Slide 6). Hand out Worksheet Page 1 (“My Flavor Vote”). Students vote for ONE favorite flavor by circling it and writing why they chose it.

Flavor options: Cherry, Grape, Strawberry, Watermelon, Blue Raspberry, Green Apple.

3. Data Collection – 10 minutes

As a class, organize the votes into a bar graph. Have students pull out Worksheet Page 2 (“Class Flavor Graph”). Students color in the bars on their own worksheet while the teacher completes the class graph on the board/slideshow.

Discuss: Which flavor received the most votes? The fewest? Were there any ties?

4. Business Decision Discussion – 5 minutes

Have students complete Worksheet Page 3 (“Data Detective”).
Ask: “If you owned the candy company, which flavor would you make first?”
Students must use graph data to support their answer (e.g., “I would make Cherry first because it received the most votes”).

5. Closing Discussion- 5 minutes

Reinforce: “Businesses use customer feedback and data to make smart decisions. When businesses understand what customers want, they can create more successful products.”

Total Activity Time: 35 minutes
