Lesson Overview
Students identify healthy and unhealthy oral health habits by creating and personalizing a Smile Hero and a Cavity Villain. The lesson uses engaging character creation to help students understand daily habits that protect teeth and habits that can cause cavities. Students color pre-drawn characters, name them, assign powers/tricks, and share with partners.
Learning Objectives
✔ Identify healthy oral health habits (Smile Hero Powers)
✔ Identify unhealthy oral health habits (Cavity Villain Tricks)
✔ Explain how daily choices affect teeth
✔ Demonstrate understanding through character creation and writing
Activity Overview
Step 1: Introduction & Discussion – 10 minutes
Teacher Script: “Every superhero has special powers. Today we are going to meet two characters. A Smile Hero protects teeth and helps keep smiles healthy. A Cavity Villain tries to damage teeth and cause cavities. Your job is to bring these characters to life by coloring them, naming them, and deciding what powers they have.”
Ask the class: What helps keep teeth healthy? (Brushing, flossing, water, healthy foods). What habits hurt teeth? (Too much candy, soda, skipping brushing).
Step 2: Student Activity – 15 – 20 minutes
Hand out Worksheet 1 (Smile Hero) and Worksheet 2 (Cavity Villain). Students will: Color both pre-drawn characters, create a name for each, write Hero Powers and Villain Tricks, and complete the writing sections.
Note: Characters are pre-drawn so students can focus on the oral health concepts rather than artistic ability.
Step 3: Partner Share – 5 minutes
Students share with a partner: Hero name, one Hero power, Villain name, one Villain trick.
Step 4: Closing Discussion – 5 minutes
Ask: “What Smile Hero power can you use every day?”
Reinforce: “Every time you brush, floss, drink water, or make healthy choices, you are being a Smile Hero.”
Total Activity Time: 40 minutes
